Enmore Talks #5 – Degrees of Separation….

The theme for this particular evening is concerned with “Degrees of Separation” and how the final result of one’s work/direction/occupation might have deviated from the initial concept.
Additionally, the theme touches on the often-precarious relationship between art and commerce, but also that of the graphic designer, the client and the public.

Guest speakers are:

Joseph Allen Shea - Joseph Allen Shea is an independent curator, publisher and gallerist. Believing everyone should be able to view and be touched by art Joseph works primarily with self-taught artists and those who began working outside the art world establishment. His exhibitions and publications are not concerned with high and low art but to bring fresh and exciting ideas and aesthetics to larger audiences without exclusivity. He has curated well over 60 exhibitions at Monster Children Gallery in Darlinghurst, Sydney as well as other galleries and institutions in Sydney, Melbourne and London including the lauded ‘Batteries Not Included’ at the Australian Centre for Photography, Sydney

As Izrock Pressings; a platform for small run, independently published artist books and zines he has published over 20 art articles distributed worldwide. Community minded and action focused Joseph Allen Shea and Izrock Mixed Business deliver art direct to the audience in a personal, non-exclusive and tactile manner.

Gemma O’Brien - Gemma O’Brien is a designer based in Sydney working primarily with hand-drawn lettering, typography, graphic design, illustration and art direction for motion graphics.
Over the past four years she has created work for clients including The New York Times, Smirnoff, Canon, Ferrero: Mon Cheri, ABC3, Bob Hawke, and Julia Stone. Her work has been published in books and magazines including Grafik, Graphic Design Referenced, Just My Type, Form Magazine, Frankie and Slanted Magazine.

Her work has been exhibited in shows at Gallery Eight, Somedays, Object Gallery, Lo-Fi Collective, Gaffa Gallery, The Wall and The Paper Mill. She has presented at conferences including Typo Berlin, Germany in 2009 and Semi Permanent (Sydney, Brisbane and Perth) in 2011.In 2010 she worked as a designer at Animal Logic and directed the new opening titles for ABC’s Play School. In 2011 she joined the collaborative, creative team at Toby and Pete with a focus on typographic work. She is currently a designer at award-winning studio Fuel VFX.

Mark Gowing - After ten years of experience across a variety of design mediums, Mark began his own design practice in Sydney in 1997. The studio has since established numerous long term relationships with clients in both the corporate and cultural fields. The success of these engagements is testament to Mark’s desire to foster creative relationships with like minded enterprise.

Mark’s work has been exhibited and published around the world. Mark has received three AGDA Pinnacle awards from the Australian Graphic Design Association as well as numerous local and international awards including New York Type Directors Club excellence awards, Tokyo Type Directors Club excellence awards, A Golden Bee Laureate Award as well as Graphis Poster Annual Platinum and Gold awards. In 2008 Mark became the first Australian to win the Gold Medal at the 21st International Poster Biennale in Warsaw, which has led to a feature exhibition at the Biennale in 2010.
Mark is a member of the agIdeas Advisory Panel and director of the AGDA Poster Annual.
